What is affected when you change something?

Make unknown consequences known. Topidar helps you follow a change through systems, information, processes and responsibilities. Start with what you already know. See which connections become visible.

The maps never leave the user's computer.

Try it here

Click a box. Ask what happens.

This is the tool, with an example loaded. Choose a box to see its connections, or the What if tab to test a change. Nothing you do here is saved.

The examples are made up, to show how it works. They are not customer data.

What a mapping can give you

See the connections. Test the change.

A change in a register can reach a system, a process and a team. Topidar holds the connections as data, so you can look at the same material from different categories.

01

A consequence you can follow

Follow the impact from a chosen part and get the answer as a sentence to take into the conversation.

02

Another perspective

Switch lens between systems, data, business processes and units. Indirect connections become visible in the chosen view.

03

A bounded question

Test, for example, what happens if data is moved or responsibility changes team. The scenario test does not save the change.

Three moments

The week before something is decided.

01

Before replacing a system

The vendor knows what the new system can do. Nobody knows for sure what the old one does today that nobody wrote down. That is where the switch gets expensive.

02

Before a reorganisation

The org chart shows who reports to whom. It does not show which processes a unit holds together, or which systems only work because someone there knows how.

03

Before a process change

A process change is often drawn as a new flow chart. What shows less is everything around it: the systems the process reads from, the steps it triggers and those who receive the result.

What the tool looks like

Screenshots with the sample data: an airline.

The map, with a box chosen and its connections in the side panel.
What if: a relation is removed, and the answer as a sentence.
Gaps: what lacks a connection between data, system, process and unit.

Start small

A mapping grows out of the conversation.

  1. 1

Write a connection as a sentence: what affects what?

  2. 2

Add systems, processes, data and responsibilities as they come up.

  3. 3

Pick one thing and test what moves through the model.

What Topidar is not

A map is not a forecast.

Topidar calculates on connections that people have entered. It does not know whether the map is complete and cannot promise that a change will be safe.

There is no automatic discovery from code or other systems. A useful picture takes knowledge from several parts of the organisation. That hypothesis is still being tested.

Mapping with Toppidé

The tool is free. Help is there if you want it.

01

A free first call

We go through what you are facing and whether a mapping is the right way. It does not commit you to anything.

02

A workshop

We build the map in the room with the people who know the systems, the processes and the responsibilities. You leave with a first map and what needs sorting out.

03

An assignment over a few weeks

We map ahead of a system replacement, a reorganisation or a process change, and hand over the map and an analysis of what is affected. The map is yours.

Questions and answers

Before you start.

Does Topidar cost anything?

The tool is free to use. The first call with Toppidé is free. Workshops and assignments are quoted for what you need.

Where is the map saved?

The map is saved locally in the browser at this address. It is not sent to any server. Choose Save to create a saved version, or Export to save a file and move the map to another computer.

Can several people edit the same map at the same time?

No. Topidar has no accounts or collaboration features. You can share an exported file between people, but changes are not synced automatically.

Is the result a forecast?

No. It shows what follows from the connections you have entered. It does not say how likely an outcome is, and incomplete information can give an incomplete picture.

How do we start when the map is empty?

Start with a few connections you know about. Add more perspectives as you go. You do not need to configure the tool before you get a first answer.

Who is behind Topidar?

Topidar is built by Toppidé, a Swedish company working in strategy, information and data, technical project management and architecture.
